GSA is Hiring! Warehouse Consultancy Project

The Global Shea Alliance (GSA) is a non-profit industry association with 430 members from 31 countries including women’s groups, brands and retailers, suppliers, and NGOs. Through public-private partnerships, the GSA promotes industry sustainability, quality practices and standards, and demand for shea in food and cosmetics.

In July 2015, the West Africa Trade Hub awarded the Global Shea Alliance with a one-year grant to provide trainings on cooperative development, business development, and aggregation trainings to women shea collectors across west Africa as a pilot project for the GSA sustainability program. This pilot project was awarded after the launch of sustainability program that identifies industry-wide challenges and implement solutions through stakeholder guidelines and collaborative projects.

The GSA facilitated the construction and donation of 20 warehouses to women cooperatives under the project and the WATH grant was used to provide business trainings to the women beneficiaries on the utilization and management of the warehouses.

The GSA seeks an Independent Consultant to assess the success of the warehouses constructed and trainings provided under the WATH project and develop best practices for current and future projects.

Project Timeline: October 15 – November 30, 2017

Targeted Locations: Ghana, Benin, Nigeria, Cote d’Ivoire and Burkina Faso.

 Area of Focus: The assignment should be carried out through collaborations and consultations with stakeholders that participated in the project in all the project locations and should consider the following:

Warehouse construction best practices & learnings:

  • Land donations and registration
  • Warehouse financing
  • Warehouse location
  • Proximity to members of the cooperative
  • In-kind contribution by women
  • Size of warehouse
  • Materials used for construction
  • List of local construction materials
  • Warehouse ownership by the cooperatives

Warehouse Utilization best practices & learnings:

  • Women cooperatives development
  • Number of women groups and individuals per group
  • List of trainings received
  • Effectiveness of trainings
  • Warehouse management committee
  • Aggregation (frequency, weighing methods, record keeping)
  • Contract with buyers
  • Warehouse sales
  • Profit sharing strategy
  • Utilization / Sharing of the warehouse for other crops

Pre-financing Best Practices & learnings

  • Availability of pre-financing options
  • Warehouse specific pre-financing strategy (VSLA, micro credit)
  • Average cost of credit
  • Best example of well-organized pre-financing 

Application Requirements:

Interested applicants must submit the following as part of their expression of interest:

  • Proof of expertise and technical capacity to undertake the project
  • Detailed budget (project fee and travel cost)
  • Implementation strategy (Detailed work plan and activities)
  • List of professional references
  • Fluency in French is an advantage


Expected Deliverables:

  • Initial report for comments by GSA’s technical team
  • Final comprehensive report (covering the area of focus noted above)
