Position: Program Director, Sustainable Shea Initiative

Location: Accra, Ghana (25% regional travel)

Start Date: October 1, 2016


Established in 2011, the GSA is a non-profit industry association with 400 members from 31 countries including women’s groups, brands and retailers, suppliers, and NGOs. Through public-private partnerships, the GSA promotes industry sustainability, quality practices and standards, and demand for shea in food and cosmetics. 

In partnership with the US Agency for International Development, the GSA recently launched a five-year, $3,000,000 USD matching grant fund to support the implementation of our sustainability work streams: (1) warehouses for women shea collectors; (2) capacity building and business training for women’s groups receiving warehouses; (3) health and safety pilot projects; (4) research and development of planting materials; (5) parkland management trainings for shea communities; and (6) conservation pilot projects.


The program director will manage the implementation of the matched grant including: 1) developing partnerships with GSA members; 2) monitoring and evaluation of partner activities; 3) best practice development; 4) fundraising; and 5) support other GSA promotional efforts.   

Duties and Responsibilities

Partnership Development

  • Manage ongoing call for proposal process with GSA public and private partners
  • Develop and manage agreements with GSA partners to maximize leverage and achieve program objectives

Monitoring and Evaluation

  • Establish and monitor internal controls for utilization of funds
  • Establish a monitoring and evaluation framework for activities within each work stream
  • Collect and analyze quarterly data from partners
  • Conduct annual audit of program activities
  • Compile and submit technical reports to donors and GSA members

Best Practice Development

  • Design and facilitate workshops with members to develop best practices under each of the work streams
  • Hire and manage technical consultants to develop best practices
  • Produce technical manuals and reports to support partner operations


  • Design and facilitate workshops with GSA members and bi-lateral donors
  • Engage bi-lateral and regional donors to support GSA partner activities
  • Develop concept notes and funding proposals in collaboration with GSA members


  • Contribute to the administration of the international conference and general assembly as well the African Cosmetics Exhibition
  • Support policy engagements with West African governments


  • Minimum of bachelor’s degree.
  • Minimum four years of project management experience project in public or private sectors
  • Excellent organizational, quantitative, and analytical skill set
  • Proven ability to build and maintain institutional relationships
  • Ability to handle multiple tasks and projects simultaneously and in a fast-paced environment.
  • Passion and commitment for rural development and women’s empowerment in Africa.
  • Ability to work independently and in a team environment.
  • Preferred French reading and writing ability
