Established in 2011, The Global Shea Alliance (GSA) is a nonprofit industry association based in Accra, Ghana. We currently have 430 members from 31 countries including food and cosmetic brands, suppliers, women’s groups, and non-profit organizations.

Through public-private partnerships, the GSA promotes industry sustainability, quality practices and standards, and demand for shea in food and cosmetics. We implement the following activities:


  • Quality trainings for women's groups on kernel collection, processing, and storage
  • Implementation of kernel quality standards in collaboration with members and national/regional standards bodies
  • Small business trainings including accounting, marketing, packaging, and formulation workshops



  • Annual International conferences in West Africa, Europe, and the United States
  • Annual African cosmetics brand exhibition
  • International policy analysis and advocacy to remove trade barriers
  • Research on shea benefits in food and cosmetics
  • African national association development
  • International consumer and industry media engagement



  • Implementation of multi-stakeholder guielines for sustainable business practices
  • Large-scale development projects including warehouse construction, business development trainings, health and safety initiatives, parkland management, improved planting materials, and conservation pilot projects


The GSA is hiring a full time communications and events director to lead the development and implementation of organizational, industry, and consumer-facing communication strategies.  The position will also lead management of GSA annual conferences and exhibitions in Africa, U.S., and EU. 

Duties and Responsibilities

The communications and events director will implement the following activities: 

  • Develop and manage relationships with international press
  • Pitch stories to promote the GSA and shea industry
  • Write press releases and success stories regarding the GSA and shea industry
  • Manage website and social media content
  • Coordinate the production of a quarterly newsletter
  • Monitor ongoing opportunities for international event participation
  • Develop a consumer facing website to promote shea benefits in food and cosmetics
  • Develop marketing materials for GSA conferences and other promotional events
  • Lead organization of 4 annual international conferences and exhibition including recruit speakers, sponsors, and participants
  • Assist with technical reports for public and private stakeholders
  • Assist with writing new funding proposals
  • Assist with event management including speaker and participant recruitment



  • Minimum of a bachelor’s degree.
  • Minimum of four years professional experience in international development, sustainable supply chains, and/or non-profit or corporate communications
  • Positive, “can-do” attitude and no fear of failure
  • Experience writing for newspapers, magazines, and/or consumer friendly publications
  • Concise and convincing written and verbal communication abilities
  • Proven project management and event planning experience
  • Ability to design marketing documents and strong competency with related computer programs
  • Ability to learn and quickly assimilate diverse technical information
  • Passion and commitment for women’s empowerment in Africa
  • Written and spoken English and French


The communications and events director will report to the GSA managing director and work closely with the directors of development, sustainability, and Africa operations.
