Field Story: Securing Pre-financing for Women Shea Cooperatives

Global Shea Alliance (GSA) sustainability partner, Association Karité Benin (AKB) has secured a credit line of 117,000,000 CFA ($210,000) from micro-finance institutions, that will benefit over 2,790 women shea collectors from 93 groups in Northern Benin.  The working capital is being distributed by the cooperatives to its women members, so they can meet pressing cash needs and aggregate 750 tons of kernels per year.  The aggregation allows cooperatives to earn up to 50% more profit per kilo, than an individual member sale in a village market.
As part of the USAID Sustainable Shea Initiative, the GSA is establishing new financing solutions that fit the need of women collectors and processors. Click here to register as a GSA member.
